Join Us as a Registered Nurse in Our Expanding Emergency Department – Be Part of Something New

With the upcoming opening of our brand new six-bed Emergency Department Short Stay Unit (ED SSU), Mount Gambier & District Health Service is entering an exciting new phase in delivering responsive, patient-centred care. This expansion is designed to improve patient flow, reduce unnecessary hospital admissions, and enhance outcomes – all while giving our ED team the space to do what they do best: deliver fast, focused, and high-quality care.

What’s exciting?

  • Two new beds opening in a purpose-built space featuring private ensuites, a shared lounge, courtyard, and multipurpose room.
  • Provision of local, medically supervised withdrawal care for people dependent on alcohol and other drugs. Admissions will be planned, voluntary, and focused on keeping care closer to home while strengthening partnerships with local AOD services.
  • A fantastic opportunity to work closely with a smaller group of patients and develop advanced clinical skills.
  • Gain experience in complex care coordination, discharge planning, and recovery-focused nursing.
  • Increased opportunities for collaboration between junior and senior nurses, fostering mentorship, hands-on learning, and professional growth within a supportive team environment.

About the role:

You’ll be part of a dynamic and growing emergency team that’s passionate about innovation and improving patient experiences. Whether you’re an experienced ED nurse or ready to grow your skills in a fast-paced environment, this is a fantastic opportunity to take the next step in your career.

  • Gain hands-on experience in both the Emergency Department and Short Stay Unit, managing a wide variety of presentations across all age groups and acuity levels.
  • Work within a supportive team where senior and junior nurses collaborate closely to strengthen clinical decision-making and team-based care.
  • Benefit from real-time mentoring and opportunities for continuous learning in a progressive health service.
  • Contribute to shaping a new model of emergency care within a purpose-built, forward-thinking unit.

About the role:

As a Registered Nurse/Midwife in the Emergency Department Short Stay Unit, you will provide high-quality care in a fast-paced clinical environment. You will develop from a novice to a proficient practitioner, consolidating your knowledge and skills through hands-on experience and ongoing professional development. You will be accountable for your own clinical standards and the safe delegation of care, ensuring a consistently high level of person-centred service within the dynamic ED/SSU setting.

What We Are Looking For:

  • Registered or eligible for registration as a Nurse or Midwife with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia, with a current practising certificate.
  • Demonstrated competence in emergency or acute nursing practice, in accordance with professional standards.
  • A flexible, team-focused approach with a strong commitment to high-quality, patient-centred care.
  • Enthusiasm for learning, innovation, and delivering excellent care in a high-energy setting.

See role description for qualifications.
