About the Role:

The Northern Adelaide Local Health Network is seeking a Nurse Consultant – Consultation Liaison to join the Adult Acute Mental Health Service to make a significant impact on the lives of patients and contribute to the advancement of mental health nursing.

In this exciting role, you will play a pivotal part in providing education and advice to general nurses regarding the provision of nursing care to patients experiencing complex mental health problems in the general hospital environment. Your expertise will be invaluable in guiding non-pharmacological approaches to agitation and challenging behaviours, promoting a least restrictive environment, and reducing the risk of injury to patients and staff.

As a Nurse Consultant – Consultation Liaison, you will:

  • Assess and manage complex presentations where nursing staff require assistance or education on approaches to care provision.
  • Advise on therapeutic approaches, such as therapeutic use of self, behaviour activation, positive reinforcement, and acknowledgement.
  • Provide guidance on risk management, level of nursing observation required, and clinical specials.
  • Educate on managing countertransference from nurse to patient regarding personality variables, including antisocial, dependent, avoidant, narcissistic, and borderline traits.
  • Facilitate the reduction of stigma and prejudice towards mental health patients.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Liaising and facilitating transfer and communication between general and mental health nursing teams regarding nursing suitability and patient transfers.
  • Developing and maintaining constructive working relationships with senior nursing teams across mental health and general wards.
  • Assisting in managing discharge planning for referred patients with complex mental health and general nursing needs to ensure appropriate follow-up.
  • Building increased knowledge of psychiatric medication management and implications for nursing care.
  • Contributing and collaborating with general nursing staff to develop integrated mental health and general nursing care plans for patients.

In this role, you will be required to work Saturday and Sunday 8-hour shifts, with the potential for up to 4 weekends per month.

To be eligible for this position, you must be registered or eligible for registration as a Nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia and who holds, or who is eligible to hold, a current practicing certificate, enrolled in an approved Mental Health course or holds a qualification in mental health practice.
