About Port Pirie Regional Health Service

Port Pirie is located 223 kilometres from Adelaide – Port Pirie is a vibrant city known as the “City of Opportunity” with major retail, attractions, tourism, arts, sporting, and events.  It is nestled in the Southern Flinders Ranges as well as being situated on the Spencer Gulf, providing the perfect location of rolling hills meeting the beautiful coastline and is a small drive to some of the most spectacular and diverse hiking trails.

Port Pirie Regional Health Service is a 52 bed Acute facility inclusive of Emergency, Perioperative, Renal Dialysis, Chemotherapy, Birthing, Outpatient Services, Acute Medical and Acute Surgical Services with a co-located Residential Aged Care Facility – Hammill House. With over 15,000 presentations through ED each year along with surgical and direct admissions of patients across the lifespan, the service is supported onsite medical team and onsite SA Pharmacy, SA Pathology, SA Dental Service and SA Medical imaging.

Port Pirie Regional Health Service – Emergency Department

Port Pirie Emergency Department is a dynamic service which sees over 15,000 people per year inclusive of both adult and paediatric presentations. The department sees patients of varying acuity and is an up-transfer facility for many YNLHN sites, Port Pirie ED is a Code Stroke Thrombolysis centre with 24/7 access to CT and radiology. Staffed and supported by medical officers and senior nurses providing comprehensive, high-level emergency care to patients.

Port Pirie Regional Health Service – Nurse Led Ambulatory Service (NLAS)

This dynamic, cutting-edge nurse led programme offers the community a variety of clinical services aimed at maximising wellbeing and hospital avoidance. The service operates 7 days a week 0700-2130, providing approximately 10,000 service events annually. The service delivers three essential clinical streams:

  1. Nurse led clinical care including suture/staple removal, wound care – simple and complex, burns management, elective ECGs, cardiac holter monitors, bladder scans, urine voiding flows
  2. Management of triage 5 diversions from the ED -facilitated by either direct referral or appointment based.
  3. IV Antibiotic therapy – offering IV antibiotic therapy up to 3 times per day.

Supported by the co-located Emergency Department team, NLAS team maintains strong relationships with GPs, specialists and tertiary services including the RAH Burns Unit to facilitate ongoing care options and optimal treatment plans that can be delivered locally.

Port Pirie Regional Health Service – Acute Medical/ Palliative Care (Ward A)

Port Pirie Medical Ward/Palliative Care Unit (Ward A) is a dynamic service which provides comprehensive, person-centred care for patients across the lifespan. The department is focussed on timely comprehensive assessment, treatment, and medical care for patients, specialising in managing acute medical conditions of varying acuity including both paediatric patients, mental health presentations and palliative care.

Ward A has 23 acute beds, 5 monitored beds and 2 palliative care beds. Services offered include 24-hours accident and emergency, acute and general medical services, chemotherapy, medical imaging, surgical services, obstetric and maternity care, palliative care, on site pharmacy, Renal Dialysis, and outpatient clinics.

Port Pirie Regional Health Service – Surgical/ Delivery Suite (Ward C)

Port Pirie Surgical Ward/Delivery Suite (Ward C) is a dynamic service which provides comprehensive care for post operative patients, postnatal women, and newborns.

The acute surgical unit specializes in post operative care of orthopaedics, ENT, general surgery, urology, endoscopic and dental patients and encompasses a midwifery team led delivery suite.
The unit includes a team of highly skilled and dedicated medical, nursing, allied health and support staff who work together to provide comprehensive care to patients in alignment with their care goals.
